- Willie Shoemaker grew
- up to be only 4' 11" and
- 100 pounds. But he did
- not let his size prevent
- him from succeeding.
- Willie became the winningest jockey in horse-
- racing history, compiling 8,833 victories over
- a 41-year career.
-
- Willie was born in Texas, but his family
- moved to California when he was 10. He was
- a boxer and a wrestler in high school. When
- he was 16, he got a part-time job working with
- horses at a ranch.
-
- After two years, Willie went to San Francisco
- to learn to become a jockey. He made his
- riding debut in 1949 and won 219 races
- in his first season. He continued to ride
- until he was 58 years old.
- During that time, he rode
- more mounts (40,350)
- and won more stakes
- races (1,009) than any
- other jockey. He once won a record 485
- races in one season!
-
- Although he never rode a Triple Crown
- winner, Willie did win the Kentucky Derby four
- times, the Preakness twice, and the Belmont
- Stakes five times.
-
- Willie survived many falls as a jockey, but his
- worst injury came after he had quit riding. On
- April 8, 1991, he was paralyzed from the
- chest down when the car he was driving ran
- off the road and crashed. Although now confined to a wheelchair, he trains
- horses. He has lost none
- of the fierce
- competitiveness that
- made him a champion
- jockey.
